Strategies on Classroom Management

This is the post excerpt.

Classroom management can be very vital when coming to your classroom. this can range anywhere from how you talk to students to what students do in your classroom. in a recent blog post by edutopia, Rebecca Alber gives us 5 tips classroom management tips. Alber tells us that in our first few years teaching we will make mistakes, which is okay, but these tips can steer us in starting the year off right.

Her first tip is using a normal, natural voice. Students will mirror your voice used in the classroom, so it is best if semi-shouting is not used. you could loose your voice this way and then the student could take notice in the change. if we speak in a normal calm voice the student will follow by example. The tone in your voice matters, so if you are asking to put their backpacks away or to get in groups use a declarative tone rather than a conversational tone.

The second tip is to speak only when students are quiet and ready. in your classroom, students will be noisy and eager to talk to one another. It is important only to talk when students are listening if not you will repeat yourself several times and loose your voice. The third tip is using hand signals and other nonverbal communication. This can help with students staying quiet in class. for example raising your hand to show you have something to say and have your students raise theirs when quiet.

Her fourth tip is addressing behavior issues quickly and wisely. in all classrooms there will be students who have a mistaken behavior and it is important to know how to approach that student. Speak with the students or students privately and do not accuse them of doing anything just simply ask a naïve question, such as; how might I help you? This can help with building trust in the teacher because the child might expect you to accuse them. The fifth and final tip is always have a well designed and engaging lesson. keeping the students engaged is an important tactic because when they are engaged the problem of misbehavior decreases. hands on activities keep the students interested in learning.

Rebecca Alber gives us great tips in managing the classroom. We can use these tips in keeping our classroom a fun and safe environment for all students.

Blog Review

Is there a such thing as too much BBQ? One student writes a blog about having too much BBQ.  She travels all over Austin, Texas for the best BBQ. One the first day she tried a restraint downtown and provided pictures and a explanation of the food she tried. She talks about how she tried different BBQ places over the weekend and provides a descriptive explanation of the food and even provided pictures.

Overall, this blog was very detailed and knowledgeable. if I was to go to Austin, Texas I would want to try these places because of how detailed she was. I would recommend this blog to someone visiting or living in Texas just to give them an idea on what BBQ places they should try.

Organizations

Organization in the classroom is very important. Keeping a well Organized classroom can help you and your students keep in task. organizing in the classroom can range from keeping your desk neat to organizing your library.  The library is an important area in your classroom, if not organized right students could be reading books way to advanced for their level.  Maria Monore provides some insight to building a classroom library in her blog Kinder Craze.

Maria explains that it is important to gather books from parents donating to book sales. after you have books get bins to organize them into to.  Then comes labeling, which is important.  she explains organizing books into categories such as space books, money books, bug books, etc. Organize the books into bins according to their category and use labels. this will help the student decide on a book by their interest.

Organization of books can be very important for a early childhood classroom.  Using labels and pictures are always good for students to be able to associate the picture to the words. Maria Monore has good insight on how to organize and set up your classroom such as her library tips.

Activities

while teaching younger students it is important to create funs way to learn new ideas.  A way to do this is create themes for each lesson.  Maria Manore gives us a new look into learning math in her blog Kinder Craze.

In her lesson she incorporated apples into a math lesson. her class was learning about counting and number recognition. writing numbers can be difficult for young children, Maria uses a number song and white board to practice writing and recognizing numbers.  She created a Apple Number Writing book as a tool for students to use to practice writing numbers. The books contain dashed numbers for students to practice.

this is a creative and fun way for students to learn how to write and recognize numbers. in your classroom to keep students engaged and inspired to learn there must be fun activities for them to do. Maria Manore provides various ideas for every subject to keep your students actively engaged.

Structure

In a blog post done in 2013, a kindergarten Assistant, Stephanie, explains to us how structure in a classroom is vital for good classroom management. Being organized and clean is one of the tips Stephanie gives us. The classroom should be set up in a way that the students know where everything is such as material. Materials should be placed in the center or near the students at all times so distractions do not take place.

another tip Stephanie gives to have the classroom schedule flow smoothly. Children like to be on a schedule if the schedule does not flow this can have negative effects on the students. If the students are on a schedule there is a chance of less mistaken behavior leaving room to succeed.

Having structure in a classroom is very important for classroom management. this could set the mood for the whole year and if your classroom set up to your students needs it will make the year go by smoother.  Stephanie gives great tips on how to keep your classroom neat and organized for your students.
