This is the post excerpt.
Classroom management can be very vital when coming to your classroom. this can range anywhere from how you talk to students to what students do in your classroom. in a recent blog post by edutopia, Rebecca Alber gives us 5 tips classroom management tips. Alber tells us that in our first few years teaching we will make mistakes, which is okay, but these tips can steer us in starting the year off right.
Her first tip is using a normal, natural voice. Students will mirror your voice used in the classroom, so it is best if semi-shouting is not used. you could loose your voice this way and then the student could take notice in the change. if we speak in a normal calm voice the student will follow by example. The tone in your voice matters, so if you are asking to put their backpacks away or to get in groups use a declarative tone rather than a conversational tone.
The second tip is to speak only when students are quiet and ready. in your classroom, students will be noisy and eager to talk to one another. It is important only to talk when students are listening if not you will repeat yourself several times and loose your voice. The third tip is using hand signals and other nonverbal communication. This can help with students staying quiet in class. for example raising your hand to show you have something to say and have your students raise theirs when quiet.
Her fourth tip is addressing behavior issues quickly and wisely. in all classrooms there will be students who have a mistaken behavior and it is important to know how to approach that student. Speak with the students or students privately and do not accuse them of doing anything just simply ask a naïve question, such as; how might I help you? This can help with building trust in the teacher because the child might expect you to accuse them. The fifth and final tip is always have a well designed and engaging lesson. keeping the students engaged is an important tactic because when they are engaged the problem of misbehavior decreases. hands on activities keep the students interested in learning.
Rebecca Alber gives us great tips in managing the classroom. We can use these tips in keeping our classroom a fun and safe environment for all students.
